Scenes of Clerical Life

Probably about the least catchy title ever thought up - especially for a C21st readership. It would certainly have had more appeal to the Victorians, for whom the religious controversies in the background of these stories was a live concern. These are early writings from an author who is considered by many to be the greatest novelist (ever!). 'Janet's repentance' (the last of the three) is a remarkable story - themes of domestic abuse and recovery from alcoholism are not what one might expect from the title and the cover picture of the Oxford Classics edition.
